EP 60: Is Self-Sabotage Blocking Your Success? Let’s Fix That.

EP 60: Is Self-Sabotage Blocking Your Success? Let’s Fix That.

Today, we're diving into a topic I encounter frequently with my clients: self-sabotage. It's a sneaky little beast that creeps into our lives, often unnoticed, until it disrupts our growth and success. Let's unpack what self-sabotage is, how it manifests, and, most importantly, how we can overcome it.

Self-sabotage is when we consciously or unconsciously hinder our progress and growth. It's that inner voice or behavior that disrupts our flow and creates barriers to our success. It can manifest in various ways, such as negative self-talk, procrastination, perfectionism, avoidance, and even overwhelming ourselves to the point of burnout. At its core, self-sabotage is often tied to deep-seated limiting beliefs, fear, and past experiences that have shaped how we see ourselves and the world.

Take a moment to reflect on how self-sabotage shows up in your life. Do you procrastinate? Are you overly critical of yourself, setting unrealistically high standards that paralyze you? Do you avoid difficult conversations or situations? These are all forms of self-sabotage. It's important to identify these patterns so we can begin to address them.

For many years, perfectionism was a big part of my life. Growing up with an alcoholic dad in an unsafe environment, I learned that being perfect was a way to avoid trouble. This survival mechanism followed me into adulthood, where any mistake felt like a threat. Although perfectionism helped me in some ways, it also kept me from taking risks and embracing new opportunities.

For example, about five years ago, I had the chance to write a book with a prominent agent. Instead of seizing the opportunity, I hesitated, doubting my readiness and fearing failure. Looking back, I realize this was a form of self-sabotage. But from this experience, I've learned the importance of saying "yes" and figuring things out along the way.

Identifying the root cause of self-sabotage is crucial. Often, our negative self-talk is not truly our own voice but the voice of a parent, teacher, or another influential figure from our past. Recognizing this can help us separate these external influences from our true selves. Additionally, fear of success can be a significant factor. As ambitious as I am, I've had to work through my own fears of what success might bring.

Practical Steps to Overcome Self-Sabotage

  1. Identify Your Triggers: Become aware of the thoughts, feelings, and situations that activate your self-sabotage patterns. This awareness is the first step towards change.

  2. Challenge Negative Beliefs: Make a list of your negative beliefs and challenge their validity. Are they truly factual, or are they distortions of reality? Reframe them into more positive, transitional statements.

  3. Set Realistic Goals: Break down your bigger goals into manageable steps. This makes the journey less daunting and helps build confidence as you achieve smaller milestones.

  4. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind and patient with yourself. Speak to yourself as you would to a beloved friend or a child. This gentler approach can help mitigate the harshness of self-criticism.

  5. Seek Support: True transformation is challenging to achieve alone. Surround yourself with a supportive community or a coach who can provide guidance, accountability, and new perspectives.
