EP 49: How To Overcome Fear And Achieve Your Goals

Today, I want to talk about something that affects us all—fear. It’s that insidious little voice that whispers doubts and stops us from taking the actions we know would help us reach our goals. In this blog post, inspired by a recent episode of the "Breathe More" podcast, I’m going to dive deep into understanding fear and how to overcome it so you can take bold steps towards your dreams.
Fear is a powerful emotion. It’s designed to protect us, but often, it holds us back from making positive changes. How many times have you found yourself thinking, "What if I fail?" or "What will people think?" These questions are fear's way of keeping you in your comfort zone, even when that zone is far from where you want to be.
I see this so often with my clients. People come to me wanting to make changes but then let fear get the best of them. Months or even years later, they’re still in the same place, regretting not taking that leap. This stagnation can be heartbreaking, not because of missed opportunities for me, but because of the personal growth and happiness that clients miss out on.
Reflect on your own life. Is there something you’ve been putting off because of fear? A new career, a tough conversation, starting your own business? It’s important to recognize that this inaction has consequences. Staying in your comfort zone might feel safe, but it also keeps you from achieving your true potential.
So, how do we tackle this pervasive fear? One exercise that’s simple yet profoundly effective is writing down your fears. Get a piece of paper and list what you’re afraid of. Is it fear of failure? Fear of judgment? Fear of financial instability?
Next, dig deeper. Ask yourself, "What is this fear protecting me from?" Often, fear masquerades as a protector, but in reality, it’s just keeping you stuck. Understanding the real reason behind your fear—like a lack of self-trust or past experiences—can be incredibly illuminating.
Once you’ve identified your fears, it’s time to reframe them. Ask yourself, "What if it worked? What if I succeeded?" Shifting your mindset from fear to possibility can transform your approach. Instead of focusing on potential failures, imagine the inspiration and success that could follow your bold actions.
Reflect on how different thoughts feel in your body. Fear and doubt often make us feel tense and restricted, while thoughts of success and openness create feelings of expansion and excitement. Use this body wisdom to guide your mindset shift.
A major component of overcoming fear is building self-trust. If you don’t trust yourself to follow through, fear will always have an upper hand. Create a list of past accomplishments to remind yourself of your capabilities. This evidence of success helps to rewrite the narrative that you’re someone who doesn’t complete things.
Now that you’ve identified and reframed your fears, it’s time to take action. Fear might not disappear completely, but you can learn to move forward despite it. It’s important to make decisions from a place of empowerment, not fear. This might mean investing in a program, having a difficult conversation, or starting that new project.
For entrepreneurs, especially, taking decisive action is crucial. From my own experience, the first few years of my business involved a lot of trial and error. But once I started investing in myself and seeking guidance, my growth accelerated. The same can happen for you.
To sum it up, here are the steps to overcome fear and take bold action:
1. Identify Your Fears: Write them down and understand what they’re protecting you from.
2. Reframe Your Thoughts: Shift from "What if I fail?" to "What if I succeed?"
3. Build Self-Trust: List your past successes to remind yourself of your capabilities.
4. Take Empowered Action: Make decisions from a place of strength, not fear.
Remember, fear is a natural part of the human experience. It’s there to protect you, but it doesn’t have to control you. By understanding and reframing your fears, you can move forward with confidence and create the life you truly desire.
