“Don’t forget where you come from.” “Stay humble.” “Money is going to change you.” Have you had a parent say this to you? Several of my RESET 1-1 coaching clients are currently dealing with this programing. Especially if you come from a Latino background, many of our parents give us conflicting messages around success. “Go to school, get a good job so that you don’t have to work as hard as us, but not such a great job that you have to leave home, move to another city and make more money than us, because you will end up thinking you’re better than us.” I know I was told this over and over again. And it has taken a lot of therapy and healing sessions to live a bigger life than what my family is comfortable with.
The interesting thing is that a lot of our parents left their home country, with the hope to create a better life for themselves. Talk about dreaming bigger! Yet, once they settled here, it’s as if they are trying to protect us from experiencing the trauma they went through immigrating to a this new country. And they hope that we just “play small and stay safe.” I guide my clients to heal the guilt, so start to feel more confident in going after their goals. And some of them even communicate to their parents they appreciate their love and concern, but it’s time to do what’s best for themselves.
If you can relate, share in the comments. And if you want to break free from family programing that isn’t serving you, I currently have 3 spots available for my RESET program. Sign up here to schedule a free 30 minute call to discuss how I can support you. 💛
